How do you handle rate negotiations without underselling yourself?

Early in my career I always blinked first. Client would go quiet after I named my rate and I'd immediately start backpedalling.
Took me years to learn that silence is a tactic, not a no. Now I name my rate, shut up, and wait. Nine times out of ten they come back with a counter rather than walking away.

Anyone else have negotiation tips that have actually worked?
