Do you use an umbrella company for overseas contracts?

Did my first overseas contract last year and spent weeks trying to work out the tax situation. Eventually went with an umbrella company that specialised in international contracts. Cost me more than going direct but the peace of mind was worth it.

Has anyone found a better way to handle the tax side of working abroad?

Used one for a contract in Germany. Expensive but the alternative was trying to navigate German tax law myself which wasn't happening. Would use one again for anything outside the UK.
